A La Mode

It turns out that I am the only one in Paris wearing a beret. And, conversely, I am the only one not wearing a scarf. It's hard to keep up! I take comfort, though, in knowing that even Parisiens can lag behind the rest of us at times. You would understand this if I told you about the latest craze that has hit the city. Are you ready? It's scooters! I'm not talking about some trendy new model by Vespa. These are the same scooters that every kid in the U.S. cried out for about ten years ago- the kind you stand on with one leg while you push with the other. My daughter's boyfriend, who is from Luxembourg, reports that the same "scooter craze" came and went in his country at about the same time. So, my heart goes out to the proud Parisiens. None of us can stay ahead of the game all the time, but we can all enjoy these things while they last and savor the joy that they bring- like that of coasting down a slight incline with your scarf waving behind you. Yes, scooters will soon be a thing of the past in gay Paris. But, mark my words, the beret will come back, and when it does, I will blend in with the crowd once again.
